TEHRAN CITY 25 August 2022- The Philippine Embassy in Tehran, led by Chargé d’affaires Roberto G. Manalo, received the delegation of the Gilas Pilipinas U18 at the Embassy on 25 August 2022.

The Gilas U18 team is in Tehran for its FIBA U18 Asian championship campaign, which started on 21 August 2022, at the Azadi Basketball Hall, and has delivered a solid start since with a 3-0 slate, beating all rivals in Group C — Syria, Qatar, and Chinese-Taipei, — in the Group phase of the Asian youth tournament.

“We congratulate the Gilas team for its stellar performance thus far. You are a source of pride and inspiration to many Filipinos, especially our young ones, seeing our flag on the international basketball stage,” said CDA Manalo.

The Filipino squad, however, failed to remain unscathed, falling to Lebanon in its first quarterfinal match on 24 August 2022.

Leading the Philippine team are Jared Bahay, Filipino-Australian Mason Amos and Kyle Gamber, as well as Mur Alao and EJ Abadam, with Joshua Reyes of PBA’s TNT Tropang Giga as Head Coach.

The team will see more quarterfinals action in the Asian youth tournament until 28 August 2022. END
